Heritage Houses at Santiniketan Campus

Around Santiniketan house, there were also many houses built for teachers and students. Many of them were destroyed.

They were “Gairik”, “Sanskar Bhavan”, “Dwarik-Bithika”, “Prak-Kuthir”. “Dehali”, “Santoshalaya”, “Notun Bari”, “Benukunjo”, “Kalobari” etc. named houses were still there …

Gairik


A house was situated at the Ashram pukur side which was known as “Gairik”

Sanskar Bhavan


Sanskar Bhavan was located at the southest side of Ashram pukur and the north side of Amrakunjo. Many workers and students lived here at very low expenses. The student who lived here made a garden and it was known as Garden house. Later it is known as “Sanskar Bhavan”. The house named so because during this time there was a difference between people for their caste. But in a Sanskar Bhavan, all students lived equally.

Dwarik Bithika


It was situated on the left side of the gate of ‘Ananda pathsala’. It was made for Sir Pearson. Sir Andrews was also lived here. Later it became an office of Siksha Bhavan. On the year 1956, the house was broken due to heavy rainfall.

Dehali


Rabindranath used to live with his wife Mrinalini Devi in this two storied building. The word “Dehali” may be taken from “Meghdut”. The meaning of the word is the frame of a door. Dehali was the entrance of the Ashram house.

Notun Bari (New House)


Around 1902-03 “Notun Bari” was made where Tagore’s mother-in-law lived with her grandsons and granddaughters after the death of Mrinalini Devi.

Prak Kuthir


It was the part of Ashram. Now it became the Somindra Library. At the beginning of the Ashram Vidyalaya, Gajadananda Roy and Satishchandra Roy were lived here.

On the year of 1910-12, many houses were also built. These are-

Satish Kuthir


It was made on the memory of Satish Chandra Roy who came here and worked with Rabindranath Tagore.

Shamindra Kuthir


It was made on the memory of Rabindranath’s son Shamindranath. He has died in early age.

Satya Kuthir


It was made to respect Satya Bhattacharya.

Bithika


The house is located between the Shalbithi and Santoshalaya. ‘Bithika’ and ‘Bagan’ was the first handmade paper published from this house.

Santoshalaya


A house is situated on the south side of Shalbithi. The house was named in the honor of Santosh Majumder.

Singha Sadan


This house was made by the donation of Raipur’s Singha family. In the beginning, it was named as ‘Singha Bhawan’.A bell was to set here.All the work of Ashram was done after the rings of the bell. Now the place is known as ‘Puronoghantatala’.

Gour Prangan


It was made on the honor of an obedient student Gourgopal Ghosh.

Old Library


It was situated at the end of the Ashram.In the past, it was known as the central library. Now it is the office of “Patha Bhavan”.

Gurupalli


Gurupalli is the last border of Santiniketan.

Heritage Houses of Visva-Bharati
Chhatimtala :


Maharshi Debendarath used to mediate under the Chhatim trees. That is where people say he got enlightenment.

Upasana Mandir


A prayer hall, made of several colored Belgium glasses with marble steps on all the four sides. During evening service, the candle is lit around the prayer hall, and it wears a magnificent look in the flickering light.

Dehali


Rabindranath Tagore used to live with his wife Mrinali Devi in this two storied building.

Santiniketan Griha


The oldest building of Santiniketan.

China Bhavana


A center for Chinese studies. Natir Puja, a dance drama of Tagore is painted on its wall under the guidance of Nandalal Bose, pioneering Indian artist.

Uttarayana


The garden with five houses where Rabindranath used to live.These houses reflect the architectural genius of the poet’s illustrious son the late Rathindranath Tagore. These are –

Udayana : The biggest building where Rabindranath spent his last days.
Konark : It is the second house of Uttarayana.
Shyamali : Rabindranath welcomed Gandhiji at this mud house.
Punascho : About 1938 this house was made.It was the small one-roomed house.
Udichi : It was situated on the south-west side of Punascho. It was a small two-floor house.
Uttarayana
A mud building known for its relief works done by stalwarts like Ram Kinkar Baij and Prabhas Sen.
